Portions are ginormous and you get a load of honey balls on the house after your meal (save a bit of space, they’re good)! This is our go to when we’re tired. It’s relaxed enough you don’t have to put your best trousers on (i.e. the ones not covered in chalk), the food is great and you can watch the world go by.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - CRAG ETHICS & ETIQUETTE - Lift Share - Before you even set off to the crag, think if you can lift share. If you’re heading out on a busy day with a pre-planned group and all your pads/equipment and climbers fit in one car - bingo. Beyond the obvious of a smaller carbon footprint it’ll be easier for you to find parking. Don’t have many climbing partners within your friendship group? Most cities have mountaineering clubs and there are endless groups on social media designed for connecting climbers who want a lift, a catch or just fancy some social climbing.</image:title>
<image:caption>(Pictured) The author in 2017 crammed in between bouldering pads en route to Big Jim in Fontainebleau, this is what’s called responsible lift-sharing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - CRAG ETHICS & ETIQUETTE - Litter picking - A no-brainer - take your rubbish home. But if you do come across some, accidents happen, maybe it blew out of someones bag… it might seem initially strange, it’s not your litter… but do a great thing and stuff it in your bag! It makes the space nicer for everyone and you get that warm feeling that you are actually positively impacting our green spaces. One rogue coke can or crisp packet can spoil a lovely view and it won't take up much room bringing it back with you. ONE NOT TO MISS! - Outside in the Peak host a Crag Clean Up BBQ every year where you get a free meal for every full bin bag of litter you pick up, this is a great event and gives you real perspective on the difference a small bit of effort can make to our shared spaces, especially when we group up and do mass litter picks.</image:title>
<image:caption>(Pictured) The author participating in the Crag Clean Up, picking up rubbish out of the river by the Stoney Middleton car park. It’s worthwhile having a roll of bin bags in your car so you can easily pick up litter.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - CRAG ETHICS & ETIQUETTE - Chalking up footholds? If you really need to mark them because you can't remember where to place your limbs then place a very small point of chalk from a little pinch of chalk just above or below the foot hold. Chalk does not aid with grip for your shoes, chalk primarily removes sweat and dries your hands out when it absorbs the excess moisture in them. Your shoes don’t sweat, so adding chalk to a foothold won’t make it grip, it’ll actually make it worse. Think dusting a countertop to prevent your dough from sticking to it!</image:title>
<image:caption>(Pictured) Foothold at the Roaches covered with liquid chalk. We're still seeing so much liquid chalk containing resin around climbing gyms and outside at crags across the UK, Europe and rest of the World. It's key now more than ever with the volume of climbers, that you avoid using any liquid with resin in, it's the most sure fire, fast-track way to ruin holds on real rock and, unless you use harsh acids to clean them, ruin artificial holds. We as a company exist to fix the ‘resin in liquid chalk’ problem. We created the first resin-free, thickener-free Liquid Chalk, so wherever you use our liquid chalk at least it’ll wash off, resin wouldn’t. Grab it here. Image from Rob Hearnden</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - CRAG ETHICS & ETIQUETTE - Tick marks can be necessary for some to allow them to climb something where the holds are hard to see or it’s hard to get the right points of each hold.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s good etiquette to remove them after climbing along with any excess chalk on the holds to help give any future climbers on it (prior to rain washing it off) a chance to experience the climb to its fullest. The rock deserves your respect, especially if it's granted you a hard and scary send. (Pictured) Dynamics of Change covered in tick marks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - CRAG ETHICS & ETIQUETTE - (Pictured) Zoo York (8A) at Caley; completely caked in chalk. Caley is a crag that is often quite damp due to its north facing aspect and tree cover but the rock is rather solid, so people often ignore the fact it’s wet and climb it anyway. Caley is a crag that suffers from something many crags suffer from; a few very popular problems that see constant traffic and the rest of the crag is neglected. Problems can and have broken, crucial pebbles have fallen out or crimps have snapped off.</image:title>
<image:caption>It can sometimes be quite tough to tell whether rock is dry or not, nice clean slabs tend to be okay to climb if it has dried superficially. If you’re not sure then press your lips to the rock, the skin on your lips is more sensitive to moisture than your hands. Yes, we said kiss the rock, go do it. If you still can’t tell, then apply a very small amount of chalk to the hold with a brush and brush it, if the chalk applies and spreads well and remains white then it’s dry. If it discolours then it’s wet and you shouldn’t climb on it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - CRAG ETHICS & ETIQUETTE - Hopefully if you’ve followed all the above then you have pretty much achieved the mantra; “Leave no trace” and even the chalk you’ve used should then wash away after a good rain.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Ultimate GEKCO PACK: What’s Inside? - CHALK BAG</image:title>
<image:caption>A waist bag ideal for all climbers. Handmade in England by our team this has been designed to be ultra-durable and user friendly. Two brush loops of different sizes to aid projecting, bomb-proof toggles and waist belt buckles and a closure system designed to be well sealed whilst easy to operate. The external fabrics (sides and base) are waterproof, aiding with reducing and in most cases eliminating the effects of humidity and unexpected changes in conditions on your precious chalk held within. “I love this chalk bag! It really shines on the lead wall because it’s got a nice wide opening to get your hand in, and two attachment points for the strap so it stays where you want and doesn’t slide round to the side. I’ve got a tendency to rag my chalk bags pretty hard, and they usually fall to bits, but this one hasn’t shown any signs of wear!” ~ Sam Butterworth</image:caption>

The powdery feel really makes it feel like it gets into the skin to help stop sweat, rather than just sit on top of the sweat making a clammy paste like other chalks. It always amazes me how long a bag lasts as well, especially as I chuck my chalk bag around like I don’t pay for chalk!!” ~ Jen Wood</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Climbing Chalk - A Buyers Guide - CHALK BALLS FOR THE NEW CLIMBERS</image:title>
<image:caption>Chalk balls are a popular choice for people starting out on their climbing journeys. They’re a low cost option, making them perfect for new climbers who don’t want to invest too much in gear straight away. A chalk ball is simply loose chalk wrapped in a porous material, allowing precise and even distribution by gently pressing the ball. However, one of the main issues is that they only hold so much chalk, and therefore when you run out you have to buy a whole new ball. Instead opt for one of our hemp refillable chalk balls to help both your wallet and the planet! PROS: Low cost, easy option, even distribution CONS: Most are one-time use made of plastic mesh, not great for sweaty skin</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Climbing Chalk - A Buyers Guide - LOOSE CHALK FOR EVERY CLIMBER OUT THERE</image:title>
<image:caption>The most versatile option, and definitely the most common: loose powder. This popular format comes in different consistencies, from fine to chunky, so there’s an option for every climber and every skin type. It’s usually poured into a chalk bag or boulder bucket, which allows you to dip your hands in whenever and wherever. Loose chalk should be pure magnesium carbonate, so make sure there are no additives, bulking agents, or drying agents as these can be detrimental to your performance and be harmful to your skin. PROS: Affordable, quick application, versatile CONS: Creates more dust, need to buy a chalk bag, many brands contain bulking agents</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Climbing Chalk - A Buyers Guide - Liquid chalk FOR THE SWEATY-Skinned climbers</image:title>
<image:caption>Liquid chalk should be a mix of only magnesium carbonate and alcohol which you apply directly to your hands. Once the alcohol evaporates, you’re left with a very dry and even layer of chalk. This layer is longer-lasting than regular loose chalk, and is more effective for sweaty hands due to the cooling effect of the evaporation. Often liquid chalks have a bad reputation, but this is due to some brands including resins and thickeners (not us!) - you can find out more about why this is a problem here. PROS: Less dust, cools sweaty skin, easy to apply, long-lasting, easy to transport. CONS: Can’t reapply whilst climbing, some brands are less good for sensitive skin, some contain resins/thickeners</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Climbing Chalk - A Buyers Guide - PERFORMANCE CHALK For the performance-chasers</image:title>
<image:caption>There’s a wide range of performance-enhancing chalk products out there, it’s just a matter of finding ones that are right for you. One example is our world’s first COLD, which is essentially a hybrid between liquid and loose with insane cooling capabilities. This format crumbles into a loose powder but has the cooling effect of a liquid chalk, perfect for those who aren’t a fan of liquid chalk but need a bit of help tackling their sweat. You can either use a small nugget directly on your hands or crumble a cube into your chalk bag, mix with regular chalk, and it’ll cool your whole chalk bag down for up to 3 days in cooler temps! PROS: Combats sweat, convenient, effective, great for performance and comps CONS: More expensive than regular chalk</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Top 6 Liquid Chalk Myths Debunked - “It’s an inferior performance product”</image:title>
<image:caption>What used to be a poorly created, sticky sludge is now a product on par with the performance of loose chalk and for many skin types better than loose! A lot of liquid chalks contained resin, a sticky substance which, on paper, sounds great for performance. However, resin doesn’t perform the way we think it would, instead filling in the pores and texture of holds, creating a glassy layer on the surface, in turn reducing grip and performance. Also due to its sticky nature, it quite literally sticks used chalk to your hands - and chalk can only absorb so much moisture, so once it’s used you really want it gone, which is difficult as resin is extremely hard to wash off your hands! We’re experts on this topic, as we created the world’s first resin-free thickener-free liquid chalk. Nowadays, a few other liquid chalk brands have followed suit and removed resin, however they have substituted it for other additives such as thickeners (lube) which bulk up the product and make it cheaper/easier to make. All this does is hinder your performance, so make sure you check those ingredient lists and avoid liquid chalks with unknown and ambiguous materials! Opt for a liquid chalk with just magnesium carbonate and ethanol - and the performance will match that of loose chalk!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Top 6 Liquid Chalk Myths Debunked - “More is better”</image:title>
<image:caption>Chalk enhances grip, so more chalk = more grip, right? Well, not entirely. A chickpea-sized amount tends to be sufficient, depending on hand size and sweatiness. For fresh skin at the start of your session, maybe a kidney bean sized squirt, but rarely more than that! When you apply too much liquid chalk (or any chalk for that matter), it can make your hands feel more slippery as the multiple layers of chalk will actually slide over themselves, reducing your grip. It can also take much longer to dry, which leads us to our next point…</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f3e8ffc92ef1a127afc67dc/6bdc359e-71cf-442d-94ae-3852c7b5e4d8/GIF+liquid+chalk+drying.gif</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Top 6 Liquid Chalk Myths Debunked - “It takes too long to dry”</image:title>
<image:caption>Standing around, waiting for your liquid chalk to dry, waving your hands around like a madperson - sound familiar? Liquid chalk tends to have this reputation of being ‘inconvenient’ when it comes to needing a quick application. As climbers, sometimes we want to quickly chalk up and jump on a problem especially when the gym is packed. The reason for this bad rap is due to the high water content that a lot of liquid chalks contain, alongside the gloopy thickeners added to make them look more ‘full’ of chalk, and understandably these factors are hugely detrimental to drying time. But that doesn’t have to be the norm anymore. With brands such as ourselves, liquid chalk has a much lower water content and no thickeners, meaning it dries in as little as a few seconds. This means less time waiting, more time climbing.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Top 6 Liquid Chalk Myths Debunked - “It damages holds”</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’ve ever spoken to a staff member at your gym or worked a stint in your local wall, you’ll know how difficult and laboursome it is to clean climbing holds. Steam pressure washers and strong chemicals are the norm, the gunk just never seems to come off with brushing. This is due to resin (yes, that culprit again) which fills in the pores of the holds, dries, and creates a glassy texture. Resin is extremely hard to remove, not water soluble and used to be found in pretty much every liquid chalk before we lead The Resin-Free Movement (trademarked of course, just don’t check). Now, a lot of liquid chalks have removed the resin, which means less damage to the holds and you can sleep easy knowing the staff won’t be mad at you. BUT do us all a favour, if you see someone using an Amazon special liquid chalk, introduce them to us or your other fave resin free liquid, because until all resin is gone from gyms, the problem will continue.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Top 6 Liquid Chalk Myths Debunked - “It’s bad for sensitive skin”</image:title>
<image:caption>When liquid chalk became ‘a thing’, climbers with sensitive skin knew immediately that this was definitely not the product for them. Most liquid chalks use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) which is a harsh alcohol derived from petroleum. This was known to cause issues for those with sensitive skin, exacerbating conditions such as eczema, skin cracking and other forms of dermatitis. But there’s hope! A few brands use ethanol (including ourselves, of course) which is a much gentler alternative to IPA and ours is derived from plants right here in Yorkshire. It doesn’t have the same negative effects on skin that IPA does, meaning most people will be able to use it comfortably (skin reactions are different for each person though, so make sure you test it out first!). Just check which alcohol is in your liquid chalk before you buy!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Top 6 Liquid Chalk Myths Debunked - “It’s bad for the environment/rock”</image:title>
<image:caption>Back to resin - I know, broken record. Liquid chalk got its reputation for being bad for the rock due to resin - or more to the point for clogging up holds, but this is because of resin. It does the exact same thing to rock as it does to holds, but this time you can’t steam pressure wash it or use harsh chemicals. The long-term effects of resin on crags is huge, just think of Fontainebleau. Since a few liquid chalks have now removed resins, it’s safe to use outdoors now - and even better, choose a brand like GEKCO which only contains magnesium carbonate and ethanol, two ingredients that have no negative effects on the environment and are easily washed away by the rain!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Calling - Every autumn a murmur spreads throughout the UKBouldering (UKB) forums, “Is it time?”</image:title>
<image:caption>A fresh gust that gives you goose bumps is enough to start it all, one crisp morning in September and the optimists are all scrambling to the forums “Is it time for the Call?”. With this I refer to the fabled “Calling of the Grit” a secretive tradition and responsibility passed down from individual to individual, known to the community as the "Caller". This is a heavy responsibility on a select individual within the hushed inner circle of UKB, to make the call whether God’s own rock; the gritstone, is in or not. For those of our readers that take climbing as a fun recreational past-time rather than the driving force of their entire life; the concept of a rock being ‘in’ or ‘out’ may be alien to you.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Blog - The Calling - “How could a rock be ‘out’? Stanage is lively with climbers any sunny weekend year-round!” one may exclaim.</image:title>
<image:caption>And it is, of course, excellent year round, but there comes a time, when it becomes especially magic. The temps drop, humidity reaches ideal levels, you don’t have to bushwhack to get around and you won’t be descended upon by swarms of blood thirsty tiny insects. Oh - this is when the call starts beckoning; The Call of the Gritstone.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Blog - The Calling - An informed guess from user ‘Bonjoy’ for the five conditions seem likely enough (4 out of 5 maybe)</image:title>
<image:caption>“Five conditions, I'm guessing? 1. Bracken dead 2. Lime wet 3. Midges gone 4. Cold temps (A frost) 5. A crow is born with the head of quail”</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - The Calling - The Call is generally a bit simpler for Grit’s evil sister; Limestone. There are also some unknown conditions too but the call is less to greet the limestone and more, sadly, to say goodbye to the grit (for now).</image:title>
<image:caption>The conditions are likely to be that the temperatures reach double digits, the Tor and another unclear lime crag is dry, the caller needs to retro-flash Staminaband (maybe) and the key undercut on Powerband is dry. Ultimately, if the grit is too hot, the ferns are making path finding hard and the lime isn’t seeping. That’s when you know that the grit is out and the lime is unfortunately in. But as Andy Harris (a previous lime caller) himself once stated to his succeeding Caller: “Only you will know. Don’t be bullied by the keenness of youth. Try to climb like a legend on the day of the call (lest others question your calling). Let it be known publicly & in a big way: it’s lime time.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Quite a bit further south is Wharncliffe, quick access from the M1, an old quarry facing west and home to some of the oldest climbs on grit, being Jimmy Puttrell’s local crag. It doesn’t have the best of outlooks, overlooking large pylons and lots of broken rock but is home to some great climbs. Having had a somewhat renaissance in bouldering recently with plenty of development from the likes of Jon Fullwood, Ned Feehally and many others, there’s now a substantial circuit to go at on great quality rock and you’ll often find the place to yourself. Boulders of note being Outlook Roof, Sneaky Little Fingers, The Dragon’s Den and the hard one of the crag Kobe, along with much more development left if you’re feeling exploratory. Read more on UKC in this great article from Jim Pope Great video from Wedge Climbing</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - (Slightly) Off the Beaten Track - Now in the heart of the Peak District we have Lawrencefield. Very much on the radar for trad, of which there is plenty of very high quality. However, it gets little attention from boulderers. If you venture further right along the edge, it teeters away into the woods reducing in size and offering plenty of interesting boulders. You’ll find yourself in an almost fairytale setting surrounded by lush green moss and birch trees along with many beautiful amanita muscarias (fly agaric) mushrooms in the autumn season. Not featured in any particular guides so it’ll be quite a bit of an explore but referencing against UKC and the few that have visual topo eg. Adam the Ant you’ll be able to find your way around. Certainly don’t miss the impressive freestanding boulder prior to Pool Wall, looking like something brought from American sandstone geology featuring some great problems on its various faces. Boulders of note are Simmer down and Pucker Up, All the King’s Men, Boonapi and Jab me Daddy. Along with if you’re feeling bold and very strong, the last great problem of the main wall in the roadside bay, said to be in the 8s on searing crimps and high but also plenty more development to be done along the broken edges in the woods.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - (Slightly) Off the Beaten Track - Photo by Alan Heardman CC3.0 Wikipedia</image:title>
<image:caption>Further along the same geological scar we have Baslow, Curbar’s little sibling sitting in its shadow. Facing mainly west except for the Eagle Stone which faces all aspects. Plenty of highballs to be done along with some excellent bouldering. Relatively good conditions can be found on the Eagle Stone if there is a good wind on a cloudy day. And the rest of the main crag faces west so can catch partial northerlies and southerlies and is pleasant on most days with wind. An easy escape from the crowds of Curbar with plenty of good modern day classics to get on such as A Beagle Too Far, Beagles About and For a Few Beagles More on the Eagle Stone and on the main crag there are The Balls Test, Hot Ziggerty and Flatworld.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - (Slightly) Off the Beaten Track - Photo by Mick Knapton at the English-language Wikipedia (as you can see this isn’t an image of Rivelin Quarries, we are missing one and if you have a good one and would like it featured then send it through via our IG or contact form!)</image:title>
<image:caption>Now heading a bit closer to Sheffield we have the almost always sunny south facing Rivelin, of course quite popular already but if you just wander further left along the edge past Master Kush and Purple Haze you’ll find yourself in the Quarries area, a bit overgrown with rhododendrons but filled with plenty of clean cut gritstone lending itself to sharp aretes and edges. You’ll often find yourself alone at this end with plenty to get at for those willing to do a bit of highballing or settling for top and drop blocs. There are certainly gems to be found! Staying relatively quiet all the way back to the Purple Haze boulder. Problems of note are Mini Beak, Glom Onto, Cool Running, Purple Haze and Master Kush.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - How The Weather May Affect The Climbs - Last year Paris saw 13 days over 30°C scattered across July and August, the average temperature that time of year is around 25°C.</image:title>
<image:caption>Now most of the days throughout the month hovered right around that 25°C mark but then it would suddenly shoot up and it’s not always accurately forecasted. So if the setters prepare a bunch of climbs expecting it to be around 25°C and all of a sudden it’s 35°C then those holds all of a sudden are unholdable. Especially in today’s style of big open hand macros.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f3e8ffc92ef1a127afc67dc/8e97610f-fecf-4527-82e6-87401c37ac4b/Screenshot+2024-07-02+114352.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - How The Weather May Affect The Climbs - We witnessed this at the Budapest OQS. On 20-23rd of June, the duration of the Qualifying Series it was anywhere between 25 and 34°C and with minimal cloud cover and wind.</image:title>
<image:caption>The week prior to the event? The temperature was between 18 and 22°C. A massive difference, we don’t know when exactly the setters set and test the boulders but we figure it’s the week before, if it isn’t and it’s earlier then they would’ve still seen much lower temperatures than the days of the OQS. Due to these temperatures, we saw very few tops of the boulders, especially the Men’s which were in the hottest time of day on the 23rd.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f3e8ffc92ef1a127afc67dc/05ead028-1975-439d-886c-400ef53f469a/ezgif-1-a86a75f89d.gif</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - How The Weather May Affect The Climbs - Left: This Squadra Sick Macro was probably much more holdable when the temperature was 7°C cooler. Even then they’re desperate in the best of conditions, let alone 29°C.</image:title>
<image:caption>Nobody managed to top Men’s 1, with only two athletes even holding that 10 point scoring Zone hold. With some athletes failing to consistently start the boulder. Of course we’re sure that the setters will tweak the boulders slightly on the day if needs be, but they can only tweak it so much when they have specific holdsets and sequences planned for each boulder.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f3e8ffc92ef1a127afc67dc/b108ee37-ebb8-4984-a23c-98824a2f1f56/ezgif-3-a2c134b99b.gif</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - How The Weather May Affect The Climbs - Last year, at the British Bouldering Championships 2023, we saw the inverse happen at the Qualifiers as the setters set and tested the boulders in warm and humid conditions and on the day of the competition it was overcast, windy and quite cold.</image:title>
<image:caption>So all of a sudden those desperate macros were much more holdable and the predicted separation due to slipping basically didn’t happen as most of the top men were bunched together at the top. Right: Tommy Matthews flashing Men’s 3, as did 8 others. I’m sure those Contact Pods were much more desperate during testing.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Fresh New Packaging for our Loose Chalk - 3 years in the making and our printed bags have finally dropped.</image:title>
<image:caption>Believe or not this design was actually ready to hit the shelves when we launched our loose but for many reasons (quality issues, high minimum orders, colours) it's been delayed. We're perfectionists and damn, now these are perfect. We've increased the size slightly to accommodate a pain point we were aware of; the bags being too full! Who knew you could have too much chalk? In our vision to create a great value product utilising the minimum packaging at Gekco, we crammed our 275g loose chalk bags full of chalk! (we're champions of good value, maybe it's our Yorkshire blood) This meant unless you tapped the bag down before tearing it, you might end up with a some spilt chalk.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5f3e8ffc92ef1a127afc67dc/1718370765540-AFQ3M1JYBSJ831VN5P0Q/Gekco-Loose-Chalk-275g+2.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Fresh New Packaging for our Loose Chalk - We want our products to be both engineered for the best usable whilst also being good for the environment. We've managed to add only 2g more paper per bag, preventing any spills whilst keeping the pack size at 275g!</image:title>
<image:caption>A big USP of Gekco loose chalk has always been our packaging and it's eco credentials. Our packaging is both paper recyclable AND home compostable. We've really tried to emphasise that with this new design, making clear that it can be paper recycled and contains ZERO plastic. You hear a lot of the word "compostable" being thrown around on packaging when it's actually only INDUSTRIALLY compostable, meaning it won't break down in normal compost piles but only in biomass reactors. This usually extends to it's recyclability too, industrially compostable packaging is not paper recyclable. With Gekco you get both of the goodies, paper recycling, which everyone has access to, and hey, if you have a compost pile and want to feed the worms, Gekco can help with that too.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - Olympic climbing Stage - EP have released the first images of the official wall which the Olympians will do battle on.</image:title>
<image:caption>EP collaborated with the IFSC on developing the TITAN boulder for World Cups and climbing gyms, it makes its debut on the Olympic stage in fresh new pastel colours. They have specifically designed the wall “to offer maximum range for route setting, provide the best viewing angles, and meet the needs of international competitors and amateur climbers alike.” As for the Lead wall, it seems to be entirely new! Sporting a series of varying angles with a more pronounced prow shape compared to previous competition lead walls which in the past have utilised simpler angles.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - Olympic climbing Stage - Our athlete Aiden Dunne, after training on the TITAN boulder at Parthian London with the rest of Team GB and other countries’ Teams had this to say:</image:title>
<image:caption>“I think the slight overhang is the nicest to climb on, it can climb like a slab depending on the holds but can also climb like a punchy physical climb which can really test the breadth in ability of the athletes”</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - Olympic climbing Stage - We asked our sponsored athlete Rich Winters, a well established and esteemed routesetter, to offer up his unique perspective on what could be set on the angles involved. Rich had a lot of great insight and potential ideas for some of the possible problems.</image:title>
<image:caption>“There is a big section of slab. I can imagine them setting a tentative slow no hands traverse here. Or some form of coordination like a fast, high stand up or sideways jump with a sliding foot for example. On the far right there is a very steep, roof-like section. I can imagine it being compression heavy there. Lots of squeezing, heel hooks. Maybe a small bit of coordination like a double slap move (these work well going for the lip of roofs) In the middle right there looks like a big section of 45. This is a great angle, which will lend itself to whatever the setters want. Middle left there looks like vert which blends into the prow feature. I can imagine there being a sideways jump or skip into a hold on the steep prow. Possible requiring a toe hook catch to stick the hold...or a 1,2 or 3 momentum move with the hands. Can't wait to see what the setters come up with, I have no doubt it will be a spectacular show.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - Olympic climbing Stage</image:title>
<image:caption>We asked our athlete Jen Wood for her thoughts on the Lead wall: “I like that the Lead wall doesn’t seem to resemble any other World Cup Walls. I like the simplicity of it. It has similarities to classic walls like Chamonix but with slight variations across the width, which should make each route feel a bit different angle wise. Setters have in the past struggled to create this at comps so this could be exciting”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - Olympic climbing Stage - The Lead wall looks like it could become more powerful in the moves required and the angles will certainly have been created with the new scoring format in mind (read about it here). As only the top 40 holds are point scoring, it’s difficult to say how many holds wouldn’t score points currently as the routes can meander around the wall. But we can say the setters either would set it relatively easily on the bottom to allow for all the climbers to get through to point scoring or they could be quite ruthless and set a stopper move prior to even entering the first scoring area. The latter is less likely considering the aim of increasing the viewability and entertainment of the sport.</image:title>
<image:caption>One interesting point our team noticed was the minimal overhang of the roof protecting the walls! It’s hard to be sure with photos but we hope the roof above the walls protrudes sufficiently, even though the puddles and droplets on the matting provide stark colours and reflections for the reveal images, we can’t imagine they would particularly help the conditions during climbing. Maybe this is the next step up in difficulty? Wet top outs for 100 points.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Paris 2024 Olympics - Sport Climbing Format & Scoring - Speed Climbing</image:title>
<image:caption>Speed scoring remains more or less the same as the current IFSC World Cups on the same 15m route. However the qualifiers are slightly different: Each athlete (14 Male, 14 Female) will set a preliminary time on both sides A and B of the speed wall and the fastest time will be taken, this is the Seeding. This will give them a ranking of #1-#14 which dictates how they are matched up in the Qualification (1/8 Final). Next they will be pitted against each other in standard tournament elimination rounds, starting at Qualification (1/8 Final), Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals, until there is a Gold, Silver, Bronze and 4th. Left: Salt Lake City 2024 Women’s Speed Final Overall Score. Add the seeding prior to the 1/8 Final and you have the Paris 2024 Scoring</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Team - BEN BARKER FOUNDER</image:title>
<image:caption>Part of my life since discovering the sport at school, climbing slowly and sneakily became the backbone of my life whilst growing up. It’s introduced me to people I’m proud to call my friends, to the strong communities in our local blocs, to crags that feel like secret worlds and has lead me to develop a rare and seemingly incurable condition where I shout “ROCK” every time I see some stone that’s vaguely climbable. I can always rely on it to bring me a sense of calm and peace, except when I find myself on slopers, they do not bring me peace. It's been a dream of mine for many years now to be a contributor to the community; Gekco is the culmination of my unrestingly experimental brain, my love for bringing concepts to life and my endless search for more damn grip. We’ve designed these products to be the best, not the rest... we've got performance not profits in mind and we hope you love them as much as we do!</image:caption>

<image:title>Eco Policy - OUR CHALK SOURCING</image:title>
<image:caption>GEKCO chooses to source raw materials for our chalk production from seawater processing. Compared with the most common source of mined materials from China, where mining operations have caused severe degradation to the environment, personal health of workers and living conditions of nearby towns. The benefits of seawater processing are: Full or partial use of solar energy during manufacturing Limited land scarring and environmental degradation Regulated higher standards for workers Production is controlled in line with environmental policies with tighter waste management and airborne particulate controls Based wholly on research, our findings suggest this to be a more sustainable and environmentally friendly method. However we will always strive to find the most sustainable options available and with a constant R&D effort, we are able to monitor changes in the market and identify any new and potentially alternative solutions and sourcing methods that offer an improvement to the sustainability of our product. This is a continuously evolving situation and we will keep you updated on future findings! <image:title>Eco Policy - Our Carbon Offsetting</image:title>
<image:caption>At the end of 2021, we calculated our Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions as accurately as available data allowed. We then offset over 230% of our carbon through offsetting projects verified by carbon standards. Solar Cookers for Refugees In Chad Over 200,000 Sudanese refugees have fled to Chad, sometimes staying in camps for more than 15 years. Finding firewood for cooking is one of numerous challenges facing these refugees, as firewood is scarce in this region. Women and children are forced to travel long distances to collect firewood, while facing harassment, assault and abduction. In order to tackle this issue, CooKit was launched in 2005, a cooking stove that uses solar energy, which is plentiful in Chad. This project is Gold Standard verified. Benefits of CooKit Project: Prevention of carbon emissions through a huge reduction in wood fires Improvement to safety of women and children especially Increased school attendance of children Smokeless cooking has improved the health of refugees Reduction of wood fires has slowed the rate of deforestation by more than 50%, ensuring carbon remains within the biomass and continued absorption of carbon</image:caption>

<image:title>Eco Policy - UK FOREST CREATION AND PEATLAND RESTORATION</image:title>
<image:caption>These are Woodland Carbon Code verified projects provided by Forest Carbon of which our purchase contributes to three forest creation projects and one peatland restoration across England and Scotland. Not only will woodlands sequester and store carbon, they also foster habitats, support biodiversity and provide natural flood prevention. Peatlands are critical in mitigating climate change and also provide natural flood protection and support biodiversity. These credits are different and are known as ‘ex-ante’, as they invest in future carbon reductions as trees take years to reach full maturity. It was important to us to invest in the future of the UK, replacing woodland that has historically been chopped down. These cannot immediately be claimed as offset credits, but will become so in the future.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Jen Wood</image:title>
<image:caption>Jen discovered climbing through the classic birthday party when she was 11, she was psyched on loads of sports and it wasn't until she discovered climbing comps that she really got into it. One of the recent high points for Jen was conquering her first 8c in Kalymnos this past June. With the uncertainty of competitions this year, she managed to squeeze in some climbing and lucked out with great weather. Jen's now excited to keep pushing her limits outdoors. Jen's usual indoor spot is Depot Armley. She loves the comp style moves and sick hold sets. Outdoors; Kalymnos is like a second home. But a recent trip to Ceuse left a big impression too! Beyond climbing, Jen enjoys running, mainly for the adventure it brings. It started as a way to explore new places during comp trips, but now she gets way too psyched for Parkrun. Jen's goals are to take gold at BBCs – she's been on the podium a few times but hasn't managed the top spot yet. She's also eyeing a 9a route – time for some "project shopping"!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Rich Winters</image:title>
<image:caption>Rich began climbing when he was 9, he and some friends visited Froggatt Edge in the Peak District. They made a harness using some slings and chucked him on some easy classics, and he's been hooked since. Rich loves Fontainebleau bouldering especially due to its subtleties, as well as the delicious pastries. Loves a bit of lead climbing on Peak Lime, Chee Dale is particularly lovely. When he was younger, he spent time bouldering in North Wales and wants to return for some harder blocs in the future. As a full-time routesetter, Rich spends most of his time setting routes at climbing walls across the country. When he's not working, he likes spending time with his family, beating his son Bodhi at Tekken. Rich also loves working in his garden, which he finds relaxing and satisfying and enjoys seeing it progress and develop into a lovely relaxing space. One of Rich's ongoing goals is to become a well-rounded climber proficient in various styles and angles, an important aspect of his routesetting work. He's found he has improved lots already but can always do better. Rich also wants to get outdoors more for inspiration and to send some hard blocs!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Leo “The Skindog” Skinner</image:title>
<image:caption>Leo started on his climbing journey at the age of 8, when his dad took him and his brother to a local climbing center in Llangorse. Joining the club shortly after, he soon found himself venturing outdoors, exploring boulders. He properly started outdoor climbing at 10 and that brings him to today. Among his favourite climbing experiences, Leo holds a special place for sending 'The Origin,' an 8B+ at Dinas Rock where his outdoor journey truly started. One unforgettable night, the last go was the send go at 3am with an impromptu spotter, "Big ups to that guy". Another cherished memory is from this summer where he climbed Malcs Start (8B) and his own Skindog Start (8B+) to Pool of Bethesda at Cromlech Boulders, a trip blending mountain antics with bouldering intensity. For Leo, Brione stands as the pinnacle of climbing locales. He had a single day there where he climbed three boulders, which he regards as the best three he's ever done. North Wales ranks as his top location in the UK, best bouldering with excellent scenery. Leo is about to start Sports and Exercise Science at Sheffield Hallam. Combining his fascination with athletic performance and climbing, he anticipates a rewarding journey ahead. Leo aspires to Font 8C, a life goal he's had since early childhood. Coupled with his wanderlust, he envisions globe-trotting and sending cool climbs as the ultimate objective.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Emma was first introduced to climbing at the age of 5 (16 years ago) at Amersham Climbing Wall! She grew up training at Westway which will always remain in her heart as her favourite lead wall, alongside greatly enjoying bouldering at the Hang. Summer of 2022, Emma had the opportunity to travel with the GB National team and compete at the lead European cups and Championships providing her much joy and a reminder of why she loves the sport so much! Emma also had the opportunity to go climbing in Boulder, Colorado which remains her favourite place to climb outdoors! Aside from climbing Emma is studying Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Nottingham. With the aim of further improving at climbing while enjoying the journey and life along the way either via competition or discovering outdoor climbing fully!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Tom Pearce</image:title>
<image:caption>Ever since climbing Middle Fell Buttress with his Dad, Tom was captivated by the allure of traditional climbing in the UK. Spending holiday time in the Lakes and Pembroke with his family, his initial goal developed to be matching his Dad’s best grade of E3. Thinking this would be near his lifetime best he spent 4 years casually looking for the most perfect climb. Lockdown for Tom brought an opportunity to get into training, something he'd never really spent time doing. He emerged from 2020 a psyched and significantly stronger climber but still with relatively modest ambitions. The first 6 months of the year were an interesting journey, from HVS all the way (to his own surprise) up to leading Black Knight at Wainstones, a spicy E7 if done with the original gear. Putting it simply, Tom just never expected the moves on such high grades to be so doable, but they just were. The following year brought Tom a lead on Heart and Sole E9. But still to this day he's not found that special E3! At 16, Tom’s progress has been incredible and he continues putting the work into building his portfolio of routes and experiences on the rock. He has a few unique adventures planned in the coming year and we're incredibly psyched to share them with you all. Stay tuned, this youth has some serious potential.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Franco Cookson</image:title>
<image:caption>Franco is a rare breed. Despite his youth he had a very authentic, traditional introduction to climbing. One that only the generations pre-modern gear would usually get. Hiking, scrambling and climbing everything as a kid; hills, trees and rock, then harder and higher rock, but all before being introduced to the world of sticky rubber climbing shoes, pads and proper gear. Growing up in a small North Yorkshire Moors village where rock was a feature of the natural environment, he was surrounded by vertical challenges. He climbed because the instinctual curiosity was there asking, "can I get to the top of that?". His curiosity and love for the graft has no doubt lead to his progression into bolder and harder lines. Franco is after experiences; working lines on the edge of his ability and appetite for risk. Even when he's not climbing, he's looking for the next level of madness; launching himself down steep hills (partially controlled falling) which he sometimes refers to as training. With friends Dave Warburton, Sam Marks and Matthew Ferrier he's been responsible for vastly increasing the number of established crags across the North York Moors. Over half of the new spots since 2003 will have been thanks to this group. Cutting his teeth on the unique style in this region, Franco has now started moving further afield, looking for the next step up in grades. Having already climbed two of the four E11 trad routes which exist, and after years of dedication ticking Meltdown 9a, with his relentless psyche and determination we think he just might find that next step.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Sam Butterworth</image:title>
<image:caption>Sam is one of the most promising competitive athletes we’ve come across. A junior bouldering and speed champion, member of the Precision Climbing team and after achieving GB youth squad status before COVID, he’s now preparing to go for the adult GB squad. If his squad pursuit goes well, Sam will be aiming to pocket World Cup and European medal and title wins with the eventual goal of representing GB at the 2028 L.A. Olympics. A modest chap for how hard he climbs; always happy to help with beta although be warned, he'll make your proj look like a ladder if you let him loose on it. We're really honoured to be working with Sam. A home grown Yorkshire climber going for gold.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Tommy Matthews</image:title>
<image:caption>Tommy Matthews is one of those kind, lovable humans who always seems to know someone in a room of strangers. And with good reason, a beam of absolute joy, we’re struggling to think of a time when he wasn’t smiling and engaging with new people. With an affinity to landing impressive dynos and sending hard projects, Tommy has had a fruitful journey through climbing so far. GB junior team member through 2013-2018, regular route setter at Flashpoint Bristol and The Climbing Hub, and now studying at Bradford Uni where he’s enjoying competing in the inter-university climbing league. We invited Tommy onto our sponsored team back in June after he got in touch proclaiming his love for our liquid chalk. He was so psyched with the results when he tried it at Rock City, that he wanted to learn more about GEKCO, our other products and the story behind the brand. We knew quickly, he was the perfect fit. A proponent of making environmentally friendly choices he saw first hand being a setter, the nightmare results of resin in liquid chalks on indoor holds and wanted to help spread the love for GEKCO. It’s fair to say he likes our chalk... and put it this way, he sent his first 8a+ with GEKCO. Just saying. It could be a coincidence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Callum JOhnson</image:title>
<image:caption>Callum is a strong, all round outdoor climber - a product of the unpredictable conditions in Scotland. After passing the halfway point of his Winter Triple Eight project (eight grade 8 winter routes on eight different mountain crags in one winter season), Callum set himself a new goal of completing the "Quad Eight Project". This involves climbing a grade 8 route in four different disciplines; Sport, Trad, Bouldering and Winter. The Quad Eight Project certainly suits the Scottish style, steering the journey to follow the conditions! So far, Callum has completed both sport and trad! Keep an eye out for “With The Seasons” in spring 2022, a film documenting the adventure! After being introduced to climbing through his university club, Callum became hooked and a hobby turned into a passion. Lectures were spent checking weather and planning weekend climbing trips. Making environmentally conscious decisions in all aspects of his life from combining cycle touring and climbing to buying locally produced foods. He sees climbers as some of the more environmentally aware groups of people out there - through our connection and interaction with nature we notice changes and are aware of the impact we have on our surroundings. Callum is currently working on a novel Wave Energy Technology project in the Scottish Highlands. Callum shares GEKCO's passion to make a difference, to change not just a product but the mindset of the climbing community. We use chalk every time we climb, it is a consumable single use product, one of the few like this in our sport. Improving not just the product itself but the whole supply chain, GEKCO have created chalk products that are not only better for the environment but better for our skin as well.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Gus Turner</image:title>
<image:caption>Gus has been climbing for 10 years now, starting out on the ROKT youth team and going through all the youth comps before stopping climbing completely for 2 years. It was only when he got back to it 3 years ago that he really gained a passion for outdoor bouldering and especially the process of projecting hard boulders. Going from the point of not being able to do a single move and learning every nuance of a route to eventually climbing something he never imagined he would be capable of, is the most rewarding aspect of climbing for him. 8A was his big goal for a long time; one which until sending Zoo York, he really wasn’t sure was going to happen. Now it seems that with enough time any boulder will give in eventually so why not 8B next? Travelling is another huge part of the reason Gus climbs. Fontainebleau being the usual destination of choice but he recently spent a week in Joshua Tree and is planning to get to Magic Wood later in spring. Gus was first introduced to GEKCO chalk by Tommy Matthews, someone who he has known since his junior comp career. Supporting sustainability is hugely important to Gus and despite being aware of the environmental damage the chalk industry does in Asia, there hadn’t really been an alternative product he’s seen. It’s just a bonus for him that this stuff sticks better than anything else he’s tried! When he’s not climbing you’ll find him making music and running a recording studio. It’s gotta be the only studio with a training room and board hidden away in the back!</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Athletes - Hannah Kerr</image:title>
<image:caption>Hannah was first introduced to climbing at Center Parcs and absolutely loved it. With her parents support she quickly progressed and started competing soon after. Her highlights are her two podium places at YCCF, Imst and meeting some great climbers there from all nationalities. In 2018, Hannah was selected for the GB Team and recently enjoyed climbing at her first Youth Worlds in Russia where she made semis - that was before the current Russian situation of course. Not only does she enjoy climbing indoors but also has a passion for rock. She’s normally a fair weather climber (strange coming from Scotland!) and her favourite places to climb are Font, Arco and Margalef. One UK highlight was Sufferance (8a), which she said felt great and is now looking for opportunities to visit Kilnsey and Malham again and test herself more. Hannah is currently developing her setting skills while working at ‘Hang On’. Hang-on, in Hamilton, was where she first came across GEKCO chalk. After trying other brands she found that GEKCO liquid chalk was easily the best for her overly sweaty palms and provides a naturally superior grip! She’s now tried the powdered chalk too and found it so soft and pure. “I love that GEKCO has no additives and is not harmful to the environment: I used it in Margalef recently and, apart from feeling relaxed about the environment, it helped me to ascend my quickest ever 8a route, Dr Feelgood’. I’m so psyched to be part of the team and share the GEKCO story.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>All of our shipments to stockists are made through UPS Carbon Neutral. This means the unavoidable carbon emissions caused by shipping are offset through certified projects. You can read more about UPS’ carbon offsetting projects using the button below. UPS also have ambitious carbon reduction targets and invest in alternative fuels and advanced technology to constantly improve their environmental credentials.</image:caption>
